A quick summary of results highlights the strong
performance of area players at the 2008
Roanoke Valley Invitational Tennis Tournament.
The big prize went to Albert Larregola
(VT) topping Ignaci Roca (VT) in the Men’s
Open Final. In the semifinals, the
crowd was pleased to see Youssef Bouzidi (former RU player) back in the mix, falling
to Roca. Larregola
and Roca took the Men’s doubles crown,
beating Chris Hincker and former VT player Saber Kadiri.
Martin Sayer (RU) and Cassandra Price (former RU player) claimed the
Mixed Doubles crown, including a tough three-set victory over Terry Ann
Zawacki-Woods (VT women's coach) and husband Bill Woods (Blacksburg
Country Club).
Jim Thompson (VT men’s coach) claimed the 35-and-over
singles crown.
David Hurd of Dublin took the Men’s 60 singles. RU women’s coach Bruce Harrison teamed
with Bernard to take the Men’s 45’s doubles title.
In the JUNIORS, several area players posted strong
results. Yonie
Haim of Blacksburg
took runner-up in the consolation of the Boy’s 18 singles. Connor Schroeder (Blacksburg) did the same in the Boy’s 12 tourney. Claiming the victory in their Consolation draws were Ilse Haim (Blacksburg) in the Girls 18 singles, Cypress Beach (Radford) in the Girls 14
singles, and Sophie Thompson (Christiansburg) in the Girls 10 singles.
