Mubeen Wins Group A Championship: Radford Boys 2nd

June 2008

The third try was the charm as Malik Mubeen, junior at Radford High School, won the Group A Boy's Title at the Dedmon Center Tennis Complex at Radford University.  In his third trip to the Radford Jubilee, Mubeen defeated Goetz of George Mason to capture the crown.  Mubeen completed the season without a defeat.  Mubeen is the third Bobcat to claim the State Championship, the second since Radford moved to Group A.

Radford High Boys took the second place trophy, losing a tough match to Gate City.  This result matched the team's runner-up finishes in both 2006 and 2007.  For the Boys, the third time charm also seemed to be in the works, with Radford defeating George Mason in the semifinals, avenging the Finals losses on the two previous battles at the state tournament.  The runner-up finish is the sixth for the Bobcats, with one State championship and three previous second-place finishes in Group A competition.

The Radford High Girls won the Three Rivers and Region C titles, falling to George Mason in the semifinals at State.  Top seed Maggie Jaronski took her Region C title to State, falling in the semifinals, also.

In a rare outcome, Blacksburg High could not send either team to the Group AA State tournament, with Roanoke teams in their regions putting up impressive results this year.  One small consolation were BHS successes against the strong Radford teams, with a split for the boys' teams and a two match sweep for the Blacksburg girls over Radford.

Junior Member Spotlight: Who's Ranked Today?

September 1, 2007

Capped by their successes at the Greater Blacksburg Open, three NRV Junior players earned top-50 rankings in the latest USTA Mid-Atlantic Virginia rankings.  Brittany Rivero of Blacksburg rose to the #46 spot in the Girl's 16-and under rankings.  Cypress Beach of Radford moved from #131 to #45 in the Girl's 12-and under rankings, having played 7 tournaments since the first week of July.  In the Boy's 14-and under group, Will Coffey of Christiansburg moved to the #33 spot.  Congratulations to these hard-working youngsters.  With only one USTA event being held in the NRV, these talented players must travel to the Roanoke Valley and beyond to "pick up points" to build their rankings.  Way to go!

Junior Member Spotlight: Malik Mubeen

July 24, 2007

Radford High School's top player, Malik Mubeen, is ranked as the 19th top college prospect of rising juniors in the state of Virginia, according to tennisrecruiting.net, The Tennis Recruiting Network.  After leading the Bobcats to a runner-up finish in the Group A High School tournament, this recognition is well deserved.  Keep an eye on Malik and the rest of the Bobcats as they look to capture the 2008 Group A crown.
